{"id":1468,"date":"2023-09-22T15:53:12","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T14:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.firstport.co.uk\/firstport-great-british-beach-clean-2023-at-dorset-beach\/"},"modified":"2023-09-22T15:53:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T14:53:12","slug":"firstport-great-british-beach-clean-2023-at-dorset-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.firstport.co.uk\/sustainability\/firstport-great-british-beach-clean-2023-at-dorset-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH &#8211; FirstPort joins this year\u2019s Great British Beach Clean at Dorset Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">FirstPort colleagues and residents were invited to Highcliffe Beach in Dorset yesterday (21<sup>st <\/sup>September) to support of the Marine Conservation Society\u2019s Great British Beach Clean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>[arve url=&#8221;https:\/\/youtu.be\/6frPeJQXELQ&#8221; title=&#8221;FirstPort&#8217;s Great British Beach Clean 2023&#8243; description=&#8221;FirstPort colleagues and residents were invited to Highcliffe Beach in Dorset to support of the Marine Conservation Society\u2019s Great British Beach Clean.&#8221; \/]<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The annual Great British Beach Clean, which takes place this year from Friday 15<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><sup><span lang=\"EN-US\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"> to Sunday 24<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><sup><span lang=\"EN-US\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"> September, relies on volunteers to pick up rubbish across Britain\u2019s beaches and then appropriately dispose of it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The volunteering also provided the opportunity for colleagues to give something back to their wider community by cleaning the popular Dorset beach spot.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Despite strong wind and rain at points, FirstPort Regional Manager Nick Beneke said it was a worthwhile day, adding: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><em><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe\u2019ve found everything from microbeads to a shotgun cartridge on the beach \u2013 and lots of plastic and cigarette butts that people should really take with them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Marine Conservation Society\u2019s week-long beach clean event involves volunteers recording litter collected along a 100m stretch of beach, which will help the organisation to campaign for positive change for the ocean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">FirstPort resident David Liverside joined the beach clean and explained that he found \u201clots of obscure items\u201d ranging from a metal bar to discarded dog poo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">But of the 99 items of litter collected along the 100m stretch of beach, over 90% of the items contained plastic or polystyrene materials.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">FirstPort Sustainability Manager Chris Phipps said: \u201cWe are carrying out a beach clean operation with colleagues and residents to help to improve the environment at Highcliffe and our ocean. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It\u2019s important to all of us \u2013 for the general environment and for the best of the people who live around this area, including our residents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><em><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cToday we\u2019ve found the usual suspects really \u2013 plenty of plastics and microbeads and bottle caps, and assorted bits and bobs.
