{"id":1485,"date":"2024-07-18T13:22:34","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T12:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.firstport.co.uk\/residents-thoughts-on-what-makes-a-happy-community\/"},"modified":"2025-05-21T15:10:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T14:10:41","slug":"residents-thoughts-on-what-makes-a-happy-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.firstport.co.uk\/retirement-living\/residents-thoughts-on-what-makes-a-happy-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents\u2019 thoughts on what makes a happy community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Written by Carlota Stock da Cunha, FirstPort Intern<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As part of my two-week internship with FirstPort, the residents of Compton Court in Southbourne welcomed me to join them for their coffee morning so I could find out what it\u2019s really like to live in their community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44053 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstport.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Coffee-Morning_Yellow.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Inez,<\/strong> has lived at Compton Court for 15 years and commented \u201cI <em>always feel safe, with the Development Manager and general security across the development. Everyone looks out for each other.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By contrast<strong> Josie<\/strong>, only moved in six days ago, and is already enjoying development life, commenting: <em>\u201cEveryone has been so welcoming, and I felt at home straight away. I am so lucky to be here.\u201d \u00a0<\/em>Josie\u2019s daughter, <strong>Alison<\/strong>, added: \u201c<em>I am so relieved how smoothly the move went. It feels like a fancy alternative to a student dorm. I think mum will be very happy here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Patrick<\/strong> is one of only three men to reside at Compton Court and said: \u201c<em>I don\u2019t mind being<\/em> <em>outnumbered by the ladies &#8211; I really enjoy it. I organise a card\u2019s night every Thursday which is a good laugh and brings everyone together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Another resident,<strong> Val <\/strong>commented: <em>\u201cMy only regret is not doing it sooner. After initial feelings of uncertainty when I first moved in, the welcoming environment and atmosphere of the development changed my opinion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Louise<\/strong> is the youngest resident at Compton Court, aged 63, and still works two days a week. She said: <em>\u201cI\u2019ve made so many friends here. There\u2019s a group of us that regularly socialise either in the lounge or in the garden having a glass of wine. We all help each other. Recently I had an accident which meant I was not very mobile, and everyone rallied around to help me round the clock.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lynne<\/strong>, author of the poetry book entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/book\/feelings-of-life\/mrs-lynne-crowfoot\/9781493141869\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Feelings of Life: In Rhyme,<\/a>\u2019 has been a resident at Compton Court for nearly three years. She said: <em>\u201cI love it here. It\u2019s a good area with great accessibility. It has recently been painted, and it looks very well-kept&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sonia <\/strong>moved to Compton Court from a large home five years ago and commended: <em>\u201cI feel secure. At the beginning, I was uncertain; but little by little, you get used to the people and the benefits of seeing them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Compton Court\u2019s longest-residing resident concluded: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s a very safe environment. I feel comfortable here and have done for the last 22 years.
