When a resident at Lefroy Court marked his 98th<\/sup> birthday, he combined his celebrations with an event for his fellow residents, to raise money for charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Cruwys is a resident at the Later Living development in Cheltenham. A talented musician, Peter invited his neighbours to join him in the communal lounge for an afternoon of live music performed by Peter himself, whilst raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI chose to do a piano concert with refreshments for all attendees,\u201d explained Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want any money spent on birthday cards or presents and hoped to persuade family members and fellow residents of Lefroy Court to donate to this excellent charity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 30 residents enjoyed Peter\u2019s performance of songs that resonated with his audience, including hits by artists such as Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra and George Gershwin with the session turning into a singalong community event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI chose to play songs and tunes from the 1940 to 1980 period and played a mixture of melodies and songs including numbers from My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and even a couple of Beatles songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI also played As Time Goes By, which was my late brother, Stan\u2019s favourite, and the delightful melody from The Railway Children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was also supported by Peter\u2019s nearest and dearest, with his family helping to arrange the event, and collecting donations. Peter\u2019s former employers also gifted a special cake with piano keynotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter\u2019s fundraising efforts, in honour of his special day was a phenomenal success, with combined donations from residents, as well as friends, family and ex-work colleagues totaling an incredible \u00a31,903.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on his fundraising success, Peter said: \u201cI\u2019m very pleased, and very grateful. My main reason for doing this is that my family have been extremely lucky to have had known cancer problems. It is better to be a charity supporter than a charity case. What to do at 99?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigel Green, Development Manager at Lefroy Court added: \u201cPeter and his family organised a fantastic event to not only mark his birthday, but to raise money for a wonderful cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
