A highlight of the day was the visit from the Civic Mayor of Torbay, Councillor Barbara Lewis, who unveiled a commemorative plaque and toured the gardens and recently refurbished community lounge.

Speaking after the event, Lorraine, who has managed the development since it was first built, reflected on the milestone: “Since Tembani opened in 1995, we’ve seen many changes. But what has always stayed the same is the strong community spirit here.

“Tembani Court is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a community of friendships, support, care, and love. I have loved every minute of being part of this wonderful place and look forward to many more years.”

Opened in 1995, FirstPort-managed Tembani Court has grown into a vibrant community, hosting events and initiatives designed to keep residents active, engaged, and connected.

Entertainment was provided by a young singer, while refreshments included a buffet prepared by members of the development’s award-winning Community Gardening Club.

The Mayor presented bouquets of flowers to two of Tembani’s longest-serving residents, Pauline and Pat – both of whom have been at the development since 1995.

Resident Martin Wright, who helped plan the celebration alongside Lorraine and Assistant Development Manager Kay Fidler, described the day as a “perfect reflection of the community spirit that defines Tembani”.

Martin added:

“I’ve only lived here for four years, having moved from the Northeast to be closer to family, but Tembani immediately became home. There’s always something going on, from afternoon teas and bingo to gardening and cheese and wine nights. Lorraine is at the heart of it all. Her dedication makes this a safe, happy and supportive place to live.”

The most heartfelt moment for Lorraine came when she was surprised with a holiday voucher, a handcrafted vase, and a personalised wooden serving board gifted by residents in recognition of her three decades of service.

Kay was also recognised during the event for her contribution to the success of the community, as was Lorraine’s husband, Jason, who has lived on-site for eight years and is known for always lending a helping hand to residents.

To learn more about Later Living at FirstPort, click here.

Residents at a later living development in Paignton gathered on Saturday (2 August) to celebrate a double milestone – the 30th anniversary of the independent-living development and 30 years of service from its Development Manager, Lorraine Bush.
